Friday Night Funkin’ Review

If you’ve been ANYWHERE on the internet during the pandemic, you’ve heard or seen this game pop up. And that's for good reason! This is a browser-based flash game made with the Newgrounds audience in mind. It shows up through the slightly-crass humour and character design. (Hey, there’s a song called M.I.L.F, whaddya expect?) The plot revolves around a short little rapper donning bright blue hair, named “Boyfriend” who is trying to win the heart of a cute girl aptly named “Girlfriend”, through call-and-response style mini rhythm games.

At the time of writing, there are 8 “Weeks” to play through, but lots more enemies to test your skills against in this games’ insane modding community! I’ve played through the first 6 weeks completely, and I have to say, despite this games’ simple look, it can hold its own as a rhythm game! This is coming from a guy who’s been into rhythm games since I was 8, and an active player in the DDR community.

Skill wise, it’s not too hard and anyone with a basic knowledge of rhythm games should be able to beat it without issue. The timing is pretty loose, leaving a bit of room for mistake. It’s a shame that there isn’t an “Expert” mode, but I've heard that the new game has harder modes to offer. My only other issues are that the game can lag slightly on chrome browser, and the 6th week has a “pixelated” style, which adds to some visual difficulty.
